Eichinger Winery – Great Wines from the Kamptal
The Eichinger Winery is located in the heart of the Kamptal, at the foot of the Ried Gaisberg in Straß. What began in 1992 with just 3.5 hectares of vineyards has grown into one of the region’s most renowned wineries. Today, the winery cultivates approximately 16 hectares of vineyards and is managed by Birgit Eichinger together with her daughter Gloria. Two generations, a shared vision, and a clear goal: to create wines that reflect their origins.
Birgit Eichinger founded the winery in 1992 and built it up with great energy, dedication, and an uncompromising commitment to quality. Today, her daughter Gloria represents the next generation in the family business. Together, Birgit and Gloria tend to the vineyards, manage the cellar, and oversee the winery’s continued development.
Wine from the Kamptal
The Kamptal is one of Austria’s most significant wine regions and offers exceptional conditions for white wines full of character. Warm, Pannonian air from the southeast meets cooler influences from the Waldviertel here. The resulting cool nights and long growing season contribute to the wines’ delicate aromas and pronounced freshness.
At Eichinger, the focus is primarily on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The selection is complemented by Roter Veltliner and Chardonnay. The range extends from characterful local wines to expressive single-vineyard wines that particularly clearly reflect their origin.
The Vineyards as an Expression of Origin
The individual vineyards are an essential part of the Eichinger Winery’s philosophy. Ried Gaisberg, Ried Heiligenstein, Ried Lamm, and Ried Grub are among the winery’s most important sites. Each of these sites has its own unique geological and climatic conditions, which shape the character of the wines.
Ried Gaisberg, for example, is characterized by weathered gneiss and slate. These soils lend the wines a cool, mineral structure and subtle spice. The Rieslings from this vineyard, in particular, are distinguished by their elegance, complexity, and great aging potential.
Ried Lamm also plays an important role for the winery. Here, powerful and characterful Grüner Veltliners are produced, while the Ried Heiligenstein is known above all for its expressive Rieslings.
Two Generations, One Shared Vision
The combination of experience and new ideas defines today’s Eichinger Winery. Birgit Eichinger has been responsible for building and developing the winery since 1992, while Gloria, as the next generation, brings her own perspective on wine and terroir.
The focus is not on masking a wine’s character, but rather on bringing out the distinctive characteristics of the soil, climate, and grape variety as precisely as possible. Manual labor also plays an important role in the vineyard. Many tasks are deliberately performed by hand to allow for a tailored response to each specific vineyard plot, the weather conditions, and the condition of the vines.
Sustainability is also an integral part of the winery’s philosophy. This includes, among other things, careful leaf management, cover cropping, treating the vines and soil with respect, and vinification that is as gentle as possible.
