Weinschloss Thaller – Wine from the Styrian Volcanic Region

Located in the Styrian Thermen- & Vulkanland region, around Maierhofen, lies Weinschloss Thaller. This family-run winery combines traditional winemaking with modern cellar practices and a clear focus on quality. What makes it particularly interesting is that, unlike many Styrian wineries, Thaller does not focus exclusively on white wine – around 70 percent of its vineyards are planted with red grape varieties.

A Family Winery with a Long History

The history of Weinschloss Thaller is closely connected to the Thaller family. Koarl and Maria Thaller laid the foundation for what has become the winery today. In 2006, the Weinschloss was finally opened – a place where wine, family and hospitality come together.

Today, several members of the family are involved in running the winery. Katharina and Karl G. Thaller are particularly responsible for the vineyards and winemaking, working together to continue developing the estate.

The connection between generations plays an important role. Decades of experience in winemaking meet new ideas and the ambition to develop the estate further for the future.

Sustainable Winemaking Begins in the Vineyard

At Thaller, the work in the vineyard is at the heart of everything. The family has been working for years to make its viticulture as sustainable as possible. Insecticides and soil herbicides are avoided, while cover crops and flowering mixtures are used to support the vineyards.

Since 2018, the vineyards have been cultivated without herbicides. The next step is organic certification.

The harvest is also carefully managed. The grapes are 100 percent hand-picked and selected in the vineyard, ensuring that only healthy and optimally ripe fruit reaches the cellar.

Red Wine as a Particular Strength

Styria is internationally known above all for Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc and other white wines. Thaller takes a somewhat different approach.

With Zweigelt, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, red wine plays a central role in the range. Cabernet Sauvignon is particularly closely associated with the winery. The family cultivates around five hectares of this relatively rare variety in the Vulkanland region. Some of the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines at the estate are around 40 years old.

The red wines are given the time they need to develop. Depending on the wine, this includes ageing in barriques and extended maturation.

Sauvignon Blanc from the Volcanic Region

Of course, Styrian white wine is also an important part of Thaller's identity. Sauvignon Blanc now accounts for around 4.5 hectares of the vineyards.

The first Sauvignon Blanc vines were planted around the estate as early as the 1980s. Today, they are used to produce both regional wines and single-vineyard wines.

The different sites and soils of the Vulkanland give the wines their own character. Freshness, minerality and pronounced aromatics combine with the typical Sauvignon Blanc character.

Wine with Time and a Sense of Place

What makes Weinschloss Thaller special is the combination of origin, craftsmanship and patience. The family works with what its region provides while at the same time aiming to preserve the health of its vineyards for the long term.

The result is a range of wines that reflects their Styrian origins while carrying the individual character of the estate. For us at Corkout, this combination is exactly what makes Thaller interesting: a family winery with a distinctive identity that cannot be reduced to just one style of wine.
