Weingut Biegler – Tradition from Gumpoldskirchen
In Gumpoldskirchen, in the heart of Lower Austria's Thermenregion, lies Weingut Biegler. The family-run winery looks back on more than 100 years of history and combines traditional winemaking culture with a clear commitment to quality and individuality.
The family cultivates around 10 hectares of vineyards on the southeastern slopes of the Anninger. The warm downslope winds and limestone soils create distinctive conditions for the vines.
A Family Winery with a Long History
Weingut Biegler is deeply rooted in Gumpoldskirchen. Winemaker Othmar Biegler was born here and returned to the family winery after completing his education in Klosterneuburg and Germany.
His goal is clear: to produce fine, varietal wines where drinking pleasure is always at the forefront. He considers himself his own toughest critic and aims to translate the potential of each vineyard site and individual vine as precisely as possible into the wine.
Winemaking with Respect for Nature
In the vineyards, the family focuses on natural and sustainable cultivation. The vineyards are permanently covered with vegetation, while insecticides and herbicides are avoided. Handwork is also central during harvest: all wines are harvested by hand.
The wines are also produced vegan. In this way, Biegler combines traditional winemaking with a contemporary approach to nature and resources.
Gumpoldskirchen and Its Classic Grape Varieties
The range is particularly interesting when it comes to the traditional grape varieties of Gumpoldskirchen. Rotgipfler and Zierfandler are among the most important white wines of the estate.
The Rotgipfler Brindlbach comes from a vineyard planted with 38- to 49-year-old vines and presents the variety with exotic fruit, fine acidity and a long finish. The Zierfandler Badener Weg, meanwhile, represents a mineral, elegant and highly characteristic interpretation of this regional speciality.
The range also includes Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gelber Muskateller and Gemischter Satz. Red wines such as Zweigelt, Pinot Noir and Cabernet-Merlot Reserve are also part of the portfolio.
Tradition You Can See in the Bottle
One of the winery's special features is visible at first glance: its white wines have been bottled in traditional Schlegelflaschen for more than 100 years.
This combination of tradition and quality runs throughout the entire winery. The wines carry Austria's official quality-control number and are regularly evaluated by Falstaff and A LA CARTE. Wines such as the Rotgipfler Brindlbach and Zierfandler Badener Weg have received recognition.
For us at Corkout, this combination is exactly what makes Biegler interesting: a traditional Austrian winery that not only preserves its regional grape varieties, but gives them its own character through precise craftsmanship and a modern understanding of quality.
